A new 47,000 square foot science building, erected in Aurora, New York at Wells College, was designed in harmony with the campus' existing historic buildings. The facility, situated between the College's administration and library buildings, was constructed on a challenging shale slope. By incorporating open meeting areas into the building's main thoroughfare, the two-story light filled atrium maximizes the facility's teaching space. Amenities include a 92-seat lecture hall with a state-of-the-art multi-media system, a sophisticated HVAC system installed to support the eight specialized physics, biology, chemistry, botany and environmental laboratories and their adjacent research and prep rooms. "Smart" classrooms feature wall-to-wall blackboards and computer projection capabilities. Custom millwork, windows and landscaping beautify computer labs and faculty offices as well as the building's open spaces. LECESSE served as construction manager and partnered with Holt Architects on this project.
